The LCL Awards Level 3 Award in F-Gas (Category I) is a regulated RQF qualification for learners who wish to work in the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump industries with fluorinated greenhouse gases.
These qualifications meet the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2015/2067 and provide the certification required for technicians who install, service, maintain, recover, or decommission systems containing F-Gases.
Why F-Gas Certification is Important
F-Gas training and assessment is essential for technicians working with refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump systems that contain fluorinated greenhouse gases.
The course provides a strong understanding of:
Environmental regulations and compliance
Safe refrigerant handling procedures
Leak detection methods
System installation and maintenance
Pipe preparation and pressure testing
System evacuation procedures
Brazing techniques for copper pipework
These skills ensure technicians can work safely while minimising environmental impact.
During the course, learners gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, including:
Preparing and installing refrigeration pipework
Carrying out pressure testing and system evacuation
Brazing copper pipework for leak-free joints
Detecting and repairing refrigerant leaks
Servicing and maintaining refrigeration and HVAC systems
Assessment usually includes both written and practical tests to confirm that learners can:
Apply industry standards correctly
Safely handle refrigerants
Carry out servicing and maintenance tasks
Demonstrate correct pipe preparation and brazing techniques
Successful completion leads to recognised F-Gas certification, confirming legal compliance and professional competence within the HVAC and refrigeration industry.
By completing this course, learners will:
Understand the fundamental principles of thermodynamics
Understand the environmental impact of refrigerants and current regulations
Carry out system checks before commissioning, after maintenance, and during operation
Identify and check for refrigerant leaks
Handle refrigerants safely and in accordance with environmental regulations
Operate and maintain reciprocating, screw, and scroll compressors
Install and maintain air-cooled and water-cooled condensers
Install and maintain air-cooled and water-cooled evaporators
Install and service Thermostatic Expansion Valves (TEV) and other components
Build leak-tight refrigeration pipe systems
Understand relevant technologies used in refrigeration and HVAC systems
